Data Governance Outside the United States

Shelters, rescues and animal control agencies outside the US often have to keep the personal data they collect (adopters, fosters, owners, officers' cases) inside their own country or region. The rule may come from a national or provincial privacy law, a government procurement policy, or the terms of a municipal contract. Pet Friend's standard service is hosted in the United States, so for these organizations we deploy Pet Friend where the data has to live.

In-region hosting

A Pet Friend environment in the AWS Region you choose: records, photos, documents and backups are stored there, not in the US.

Single-tenant deployment

Your own database, application servers and file storage, not shared with any other Pet Friend customer. Available in the US or in any other Region.

By special request

Both options are arranged individually, under a signed contract, with setup and hosting fees on top of the published plan price.

Pet Friend runs on Amazon Web Services, so we can deploy anywhere AWS operates a Region. That includes, for example:

Canada — Canada (Central) in Montréal and Canada West in Calgary
Europe — Frankfurt, Ireland, London, Paris, Stockholm, Milan, Spain and Zurich
Mexico — Mexico (Central)
Asia Pacific — Tokyo, Seoul, Singapore, Mumbai, Sydney and others
South America and beyond — São Paulo, and any other AWS Region your requirements point to

What Stays In-Region

In an in-region deployment, the database that holds your records, the storage for your photos and documents, and your backups all run in the Region you chose. It is the same Pet Friend: the same features, the same mobile apps, and the same full data export whenever you want it.

We are specific about what does not stay in-region. A few supporting services, such as subscription billing and the delivery of emails and text messages, are run by providers that may process data elsewhere. Before you sign, we give you the list of every service that handles your data and where each one runs, so your privacy officer or counsel can confirm the arrangement meets your obligations.

Single-Tenant Deployments

Our standard service is multi-tenant: every organization has its own separate database, but the servers are shared. Some agencies need more separation than that, because of a security policy, an audit requirement, or a contract clause. A single-tenant deployment gives your organization infrastructure of its own: a dedicated database cluster, application servers and file storage, updated on the same release schedule as everyone else. It can be combined with in-region hosting.

How It Works

Request a quote and tell us the country, the requirement you have to meet, and the size of your organization.
We confirm the Region and architecture, and send you the list of services that handle your data and where they run.
We agree a contract covering setup and ongoing hosting fees in addition to your plan.
We deploy your environment, migrate any existing records, and hand it over for your team to start using.

Where is Pet Friend hosted by default?

On Amazon Web Services in the US East (Ohio) Region, with the database replicated across three AWS Availability Zones. That is where standard accounts live, including every account created through the self-serve sign-up.

Can you keep our data in Canada, Europe, Mexico or Asia?

Yes, by special request. We deploy Pet Friend in the AWS Region you need, and your records, files and backups are stored there. It is arranged under a signed contract with additional setup and hosting fees.

What is a single-tenant deployment?

A Pet Friend environment that runs on infrastructure used only by your organization: its own database cluster, application servers and file storage. It is available in any AWS Region, including in combination with in-region hosting.

Does in-region hosting make us compliant with our privacy law?

It addresses where your data is stored, which is usually the hardest part. Whether it satisfies your specific obligations is for your privacy officer or legal counsel to confirm, and we give them the full list of services that handle your data, and where each runs, before you sign.

How much does it cost?

It is quoted per organization, because the cost depends on the Region, the level of separation and the size of your data. Fees for setup and hosting are added to the published plan price. Request a quote and we will come back with a proposal.
